How is this different from Clay?

Clay connects to 150+ verified data providers (Apollo, ZoomInfo, Clearbit, etc.) for structured lookups. OpenClay takes a different approach: it uses AI + live web search to research each row — more like Clay's Claygent feature. This means:

  • Great for public info, news, general research, company overviews, anything Google can find
  • Great for custom research questions that don't fit into rigid data provider schemas
  • Not ideal for verified contact emails, phone numbers, or data that requires proprietary database access

How it works

Four steps.
Under two minutes.

01

Upload your spreadsheet

CSV or Excel. Parsed 100% in your browser. Nothing touches any server.

Type in plain English — or pick a template. We auto-detect the new columns to add.

03

Pick a model & add key

Choose Claude or Gemini. See the estimated API cost. Then connect your key.

04

Test 3 rows, then run all

Preview results on 3 rows first. Happy? Run the full batch and download.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is OpenClay?
OpenClay is a free, open-source alternative to Clay.com for AI-powered spreadsheet data enrichment. It uses AI models (Claude or Gemini) combined with live web search to research and enrich each row of your spreadsheet — finding company data, contacts, news, and any custom information you describe.
Is OpenClay really free?
Yes, OpenClay charges no platform fee — ever. The only cost is the AI provider's token usage (Anthropic or Google), which you pay directly at their published rates. For example, enriching 500 rows typically costs $2–$10 in API usage depending on the model chosen.
How is OpenClay different from Clay?
Clay connects to 150+ data providers (Apollo, ZoomInfo, etc.) for structured lookups and costs $149–$800/month. OpenClay uses AI + live web search to research each row — similar to Clay's Claygent feature. OpenClay is great for public information, news, company overviews, and custom research. It's not ideal for verified contact emails or data requiring proprietary database access.
Is my data safe with OpenClay?
Yes. OpenClay is privacy-first by design. Your files are parsed entirely in your browser — never uploaded to any server. Your API key is stored in browser memory only (React useState) and is never persisted. There is no database, no cookies, and no localStorage. The entire codebase is open source so you can verify these claims.
What AI models does OpenClay support?
OpenClay supports Anthropic Claude (Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 4.5, Opus 4.5) and Google Gemini (2.0 Flash, 2.5 Flash, 2.5 Pro). All models include live web search capability for up-to-date research results.
What file formats does OpenClay support?
OpenClay supports CSV (.csv), Excel (.xlsx), and legacy Excel (.xls) files up to 10MB. Files are parsed entirely in your browser using PapaParse and SheetJS — nothing is uploaded to any server.
Do I need to create an account?
No. OpenClay requires no account, no sign-up, and no credit card. Just open the app, upload a spreadsheet, add your AI API key, and start enriching. Your key stays in browser memory and is never stored.
What kind of data can I enrich?
Anything you can describe in plain English. Common use cases include company research (CEO, funding, employee count), lead enrichment (job title, LinkedIn, recent news), university data (ranking, tuition, acceptance rate), product research (pricing, reviews, competitors), and more. OpenClay works for any dataset — not just B2B sales.
